Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (31-31) fanned 15 batters en route to a 3-1 victory over the Bluefield Blue Jays (30-34) on Monday night at Pioneer Park. The win leaves the Astros two games behind the Johnson City Cardinals in the race for the final playoff spot in the Appalachian League West with four games to go.
Despite the eventual outcome, the game started well for the Blue Jays. In the first inning, after Angel Rojas reached on an Astros' fielding error and stole second base, Gabriel Cenas connected on a RBI single to give the Blue Jays the initial lead in the game.
The Blue Jays maintained their 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth inning. Then, with runners on first and second for the Astros, Kristian Trompiz bunted to advance the runners. However, when the Blue Jays' pitcher fielded the ball and attempted to throw out the lead runner at third, his errant throw sailed into foul territory down the left field line and allowed two runs to score.
Astros' starting right-handed pitcher Brock Dykxhoorn struck out a season-high10 batters through the first five innings on his way to picking up the win, allowing just one unearned run on four hits and one walk. Joshua James followed with two innings of relief and allowed just one hit while striking out three to get the Astros to the middle of the seventh with a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Astros added one more score. With two outs and runners at second and third, Jeffry Santos hit a ground ball to the shortstop and beat out the throw to first to give him a RBI single and increase the Astros' lead to 3-1.
Astros' reliever Jose Montero entered the game in the eighth and allowed just one walk and one hit while striking out two. Then, Eric Peterson came on for the final inning to close the game and pick up his team-leading seventh save of the season.
The Astros will face the Blue Jays in their regular season home finale on Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
