
Astros Sign Outfielder Palmeiro

Metairie, LA âThe Houston Astros announced today that the club has signed veteran outfielder Orlando Palmeiro to a one-year contract. The announcement was made by general manager Gerry Hunsicker. To make room for Palmeiro on the 40-man roster, the Astros have designated outfielder Colin Porter for assignment.
The 34-year-old Palmeiro is a veteran of nine Major League seasons and hit .271 (86x317) while setting career-high totals with three home runs, 33 runs batted in, and 141 games played with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2003. He spent his first eight big league campaigns with the Anaheim Angels (1995-2002), including the World Series championship season of 2002. In 786 career Major League games, Palmeiro has hit .279 (496x1776) with six home runs and 171 RBI.
In 2003, he led the Cardinals with 13 pinch hits (13x44, .295) and owns a career .288 (55x191) lifetime average as a pinch-hitter.
The 28-year-old Porter hit .188 (6x32) in 24 games for Houston last season while also hitting .320 (114x356) with 11 home runs and 50 RBI for the Zephyrs. Porter has a career .275 (310x1129) average with the Zephyrs with 24 home runs and 121 RBI in 337 games. He ranks first in New Orleans Zephyrs history in stolen bases (61) and strikeouts (312), second in triples (12) and tied for second in doubles (67), fourth in hits (310), at-bats (1129), games played (337) and runs scored (159), seventh in walks (102) and ninth in RBI (121).
The Zephyrs 2004 home opener is on Friday April 16th against the Iowa Cubs. Season tickets and mini plans are now on sale.
