Greeneville Astros News Release

Kingsport, TN - The Greeneville Astros (9-8) visited the Kingsport Mets (7-10) on Sunday for a doubleheader to make up for their game that was rained out on July 3 in Kingsport. Although the Astros swept a three-game series from the Mets in Greeneville last week, it was a different story in Kingsport as the Mets were winners in both games of the doubleheader.

In game one, the Astros lost 3-0 and were only able to collect two hits in the seven-inning contest. Brett Phillips led off the game with a double, and their only other hit was a single by Darwin Rivera in the fourth inning. Meanwhile, Kingsport capitalized on an Amed Rosario RBI-triple in the first inning immediately followed by a Victor Cruzado single to score another run and give the Mets an early 2-0 lead. That is where the score remained for the next 4.5 innings.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mets got one more run for insurance. Yeixon Ruiz got on base when he was hit by a pitch, stole second and then scored on a fielding error by the Astros at third base. The winning pitcher for the Mets was starter Carlos Gomez, who pitched 5.2 innings and gave up both of the Astros' hits but held them scoreless. Following one out by Alberto Baldonado in the sixth, Ricardo Jacquez pitched the final inning and got the save.

In game two, despite the first professional homerun for Chase McDonald, the Astros fell to the Mets again, 4-1. The loss drops Greeneville to third in the West Division with Kingsport two games behind them. Like the first game, the Mets got off to an early lead and just had to protect it.

In the first inning, the Mets got a RBI-single from Joe Tuschak to start. Then, with two outs and runners at second and third, Adrian Abreu was able to get on base with an Astros fielding error at shortstop and allow the two baserunners to make it home to give the Mets a 3-0 lead. At the top of the second inning, the Astros' Chase McDonald answered with a leadoff homer to left field to cut the Mets lead to 3-1. However, they could produce no more.

On the other hand, the Mets got their lead back up to three when Victor Cruzado led off the third inning with a homer. With the score 4-1, the Mets held off the Astros the rest of the way for their second win of the day. Chris Flexen got the win for Kingsport with 6.0 innings, four hits, one run and two strikeouts. Then Robert Coles came on, pitched the final inning and earned the save.
