Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The rain may have delayed the game between the Greeneville Astros and the Bristol White Sox on Thursday night, but when all was said and done the Astros edged the Sox, 2-1. The win marked the Astros' seventh straight, setting a new club record and sending the home crowd of nearly 3,000 fans away happy following the Astros annual Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration.
The initial rain delay pushed the start time back 25 minutes to 7:25pm. Then, in the middle of the first inning, the tarp had to go back onto the field and stay for nearly two hours before the rain cleared out for the rest of the evening.
When play resumed, the weather had not dampened the spirit of the crowd. Excitement could be felt throughout the stands at Pioneer Park.
The originally scheduled starting pitcher for the Astros, left-hander Christopher Lee, entered the game in the second inning for Sebastian Kessay, who had held Bristol in check in the first inning. Lee went on to pitch five scoreless innings while giving up just two hits and striking out seven of the sixteen batters he faced.
It was during that time that the Astros first took the lead. With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Bobby Borchering crushed a solo homerun, while batting left-handed, deep over the right field wall. It marked his second straight game with a homer and gave the Astros a 1-0 lead in a low-scoring game.
The next score came from Bristol in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, the Astros made a throwing error from third base that allowed the tying run across the plate. However, the 1-1 tie did not last long.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Astros had Tanner Mathis on second and Marc Wik on first with two outs. With Darwin Rivera up to bat, he singled on a line drive up the middle to score Mathis and give the Astros a 2-1 lead.
Following single innings from Krishawn Holley and Tyler Brunnemann, Astros' lefty J. D. Osborne came in to close the game in the ninth and pick up his fourth save. With two more strikeouts, Osborne now has 14 strikeouts over eight innings on the season. Meanwhile, Holley picked up the win after giving up two hits, one unearned run and striking out two.
Greeneville will host Bristol in game two of the series at Pioneer Park on Friday. Game time is set for 7:00pm. For more information on the Greeneville Astros please visit www.greenevilleastros.com or call (423) 638-0411.
