Ask the CEO
December 17, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Jerry in Rochester, NY: "Why don't you respond to the bloggers that attack the ABA and you on sites like Our Sports Central? "
Answer: Jerry. You don't know how many times I've been asked that question. Hundreds at least. I am not quite sure what motivates people to write the things they do. So many of the blogs are meanspirited and are in many cases very hostile. They are not factual, they are distorted, but for some reason, the internet allows people the freedom to say whatever they want with no restrictions. It is shameful, but that's the way it is and we have to endure it. We will not stoop to their level. Freedom of speech should always trump censorship.
We have tracked many of the bloggers and know that they are motivated to do what they do by competitive leagues. And that is shameful also. But we've come to expect it from them too. I enjoy watching Chris Hansen's To Catch a Predator because I fully expect to see one of the meanspirited bloggers surface there and we can place a face with a name. Much of the style of writing is similar.
The ABA was created so that players who wanted to play, coaches who wanted to coach, refs who wanted to ref would have a place to be - and we have provided that.
The ABA was created so that fans could see exciting professional basketball at affordable prices - and we have provided that.
The ABA was created so that minorities who had been denied the opportunity for professional sports team ownership could achieve their dreams - and we have provided that.
The ABA was created so that our teams could impact their communities and the youth in their communities with good programs and to serve as positive role models - and we have provided that.
Why some people have to be so mean, so ugly with their blogs, I really don't know. With all of the serious problems in the world - terrorism, Iraq, AIDs, hunger, disease, genocide, unemployment, high fuel prices, etc., I wish people would remember that the ABA is a game, is entertainment, is a diversion - and remember Peace on Earth, Good Will Towards Men - and just be nice. If you have a question, please email conniejoenewman@aol.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
