February 28, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Question from Richard W, NYC (and others): "I'm confused about the power rankings. How will you determine the final 16 teams and the wild card teams? If it's confusing to me, then it must be confusing to others?"

Richard (and others). Thanks for the question. Sorry for the confusion. Our goal is to have the Top 16 teams play home games. Teams 9-16 will play the first week. Teams 1-8 the second week. There will be 8 wild card teams that will play 9-16 the first week. We have looked at the records, the number of games played, the difficulty of schedules, the closeness of games, the availability of venues and the overall opeations in assessing their positions. It is not an infallible system. We believe the rankings do reflect the teams based on this criteria but we acknowledge that not everybody will be happy. We think the real test is on the court. I know that when the NCAA pairings are done, there are many complaints from teams. And we do know that there are upsets. Look at the Pittsburgh Steelers. They were a wild card team and won the Super Bowl. Those teams that are not happy with their positions and there are a few, can prove us wrong by winning their games. Last season, Bellevue, the 13th seed, defeated highly-ranked Maryland and Texas and got to the finals. It could happen this year too. Still confused? Stay tuned. If you have a question, please email joenewman@abalive.com.
