February 2, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Question from Sgt. RL, Fayetteville NC: "Has ABA Salute been as successful as you hoped it would be?"

Answer: Sergeant. Thanks for the question. I wish I could answer a strong yes to the question, but I can't. ABA Salute has given us an opportunity to pay tribute to our military and its families on a consistent basis - and the response to all of the ABA Salutes has been tremendous. We will keep doing it. However, we have not raised as much money as we had hoped to raise for very worthy causes to support the military. The ABA auctions have provided some revenue and we've sold some ABA Salute merchandise, but not nearly what we thought we would sell. The ABA Salute pins are terrific. The ABA Salute hats are great. The ABA Salute golf shirts are very good quality and very fairly priced. Our goal was to sell a ton of merchandise and hope that people would wear the pins, shirts and hats proudly, much as they wear Nike or Polo branded merchandise. And anyone who saw the ABA Salute would know that the military was being supported. We make regular donations to the American Legion Legacy Fund, Disabled Sports USA, Wounded Warriors, Fisher House, Salute American Heroes and other fine organizations with the revenues generated from ABA Salute. But we sure wish that more people would show their support. Regardless, we will continue to pay tribute to the military and will continue to support these and other worthy causes through our fund-raising efforts. You can help by asking people on the base to support ABA Salute. Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
