Ask the CEO
October 5, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Many: "Are the only questions you're going to answer on Ask the CEO questions about the NBA/ABA game? How about some other questions?"
Answer: You're right. I am sorry. I have been focusing on the NBA/ABA Katrina challenge game because it is such a timely subject and have neglected many great questions that would be of interest to ABA fans. I will start answering some tomorrow. It appears that the NBA doesn't feel as we do that a game between the two leagues would be successful. Why they feel this way, I'm not sure. Even though the ABA ended in the '70s, the NBA continues to exploit the original league celebrating the ABA at its All-Star Game, having today's NBA teams wearing ABA retro uniforms, using the ABA red, white and blue ball in its development league. (Think about that. They're developing players for the NBA using red, white and blue balls. That's like having baseball players using aluminum bats in the minor leagues. If you're developing players, wouldn't you think they'd use the same equipment as the parent league?). We know the NBA is very smart. They recognize the power of the ABA and its history and uniqueness and exploit it every chance they get. Why wouldn't an NBA/ABA exhibition game for Katrina fit within these same parameters? Only Mr. Stern can answer that. Meantime, I'll answer more questions about this game, plus others starting tomorrow. Appreciate your calling it to my attention. If you have a question, email joenewman@abalive.com.

Thanks.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
