HUNTSVILLE, Al â The Asheville Altitude outscored the Huntsville Flight 32-17 in the second quarter, en route to a 96-88 victory in National Basketball Development League action at the Von Braun Center arena.
With the Flight leading 23-21 after the first quarter, the Altitude turned up the defensive pressure in the second, holding the Flight to just five field goals in the quarter. After the Flight's Cedric Henderson's two free throws tied the score 34-34 with 4:39 left in the half, Asheville closed with a 19-6 run for a 53-40 halftime lead.
Huntsville (18-18) closed the gap to 61-56 with five minutes left in the third quarter behind five points from Austin Nichols, and four points each from Rodney Bias, Damone Brown and Earl Barron. The Flight held Asheville (21-15) to 6-for-20 shooting and just 19 points in the quarter.
The Flight got to within five points at 91-86 in the final minute, but the Altitude connected on five of six from the line to seal the win.
Bias and Henderson were both ejected during the fourth quarter. After being whistled for a foul while going after a rebound, Bias kicked the ball down the court and was given a technical foul before being tossed from the game. Henderson received a pair of technical fouls while arguing over his fifth personal foul. Huntsville was called for 31 personal fouls, compared to 23 for Asheville.
Terrence Shannon led Asheville with 18 points. Kirk Penney added 17 points, and Lenny Stokes finished with 15.
Nichols led all scorers with 22 points. Barron had 18 points and 15 rebounds, and Brown managed 15 points on 5-for-17 shooting.
The fourth-place Flight, losers of eight of their last nine, host the Florida Flame on Tuesday night. Third-place Asheville travels to Columbus to take on the Riverdragons Wednesday night.
