Asheville Altitude News Release
ASHEVILLE, N.C., Jan. 31, 2004 - The Asheville Altitude squeezed out a thrilling overtime victory, 110-107, against the Columbus Riverdragons at the Asheville Civic Center Saturday night, to earn their third consecutive win in front of an announced crowd of 2,515 fans. Player of the Game Kareem Reid took over the game for the second straight night, setting a new Altitude assist record with 12 and pouring in a team-high 18 points, all in the second half and overtime.
"In this league you play a lot of close games," said Asheville Head Coach Joey Meyer. "You've got to find a way to win and we did that tonight."
The lead fluctuated with eight changes in the first quarter before Asheville went on a 17-7 run in the second quarter. Frustrated with his team's play, Columbus Head Coach Jeff Malone provoked the referees into calling two consecutive technical fouls, forcing an ejection with a little more than four minutes in the first half.
Columbus cut into Asheville's lead in the third quarter, pulling to within two following a 19-11 run, but Rusty LaRue hit a huge three-pointer at the quarter-buzzer to push the Altitude lead back to five.
Columbus battled back in the fourth, taking the lead on two occasions before Reid recorded his eighth basket of the quarter and grabbed a defensive rebound to force the overtime. The lead went back-and-forth in overtime until Reid hit four clutch free throws to seal the win.
Eight of the 10 Altitude players reached double-figures in scoring. Gary Williams poured in 17 points and five rebounds while Brandon Kurtz registered a double-double, scoring 14 points and crashing the boards for 17 rebounds. Greg Stevenson chipped in 13 and both Desmond Penigar and Lavor Postell added 12 points each.
"With this rotation, everyone is getting playing time and getting their confidence up and it's great," said Altitude player Gary Williams.
Columbus had six players reach double-figures, including Terrence Morris who scored a game-high 24 points. Courtney James added a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Erron Maxey contributed 16. Kevin Lyde and Jeff Myers each posted 14 points.
Asheville, now 9-11, including seven wins in their last 10 outings, travels to Charleston Friday, Feb. 6 to face the league-leading Lowgators.
