Asheville Altitude News Release
Asheville, N.C., July 20, 2004 - Defending National Basketball Development League (NBDL) Champion Asheville Altitude launches the 2004-05 season with an exciting schedule featuring 23 home dates at the Asheville Civic Center announced today by team president Rudy Bourg.
"Our success last season has left many Altitude fans anticipating the start of the 2004-05 season," said Bourg. "We are excited about defending the NBDL Championship and look forward to this season with expectations of success and continued support from our fans throughout Western North Carolina."
The 2004-05 Altitude schedule is highlighted with 14 weekend dates including six Friday and six Saturday night contests. Two games will tip off on Sunday this season including the home opener against the Huntsville Flight, Nov. 21 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Asheville Civic Center.
The Altitude home opener will feature a special pre-game ceremony honoring the 2003-04 accomplishments. Former team president Alfred White is scheduled to return to the Civic Center as the team raises the 2004 NBDL Regular and Post-Season Championship banners to the rafters.
"It is important to our organization that we recognize the accomplishments of the 2003-04 season," said Bourg. "Alfred White has played a major role in the development and success of this organization and I can't think of a better way of commemorating this feat than to have him present as we raise the banners."
Highlighted with a 60-percent weekend load, the 48-game schedule features two more games than last season. Although each team will continue to play a 23 road and 23 home game schedule, this year's NBDL schedule features a two-day Martin Luther King Jr. celebration of basketball and humanity including six games in 48 hours at the Columbus (Ga.) Civic Center in January.
The Altitude opens the regular season at Fayetteville (N.C.), Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m., before heading back to Asheville for the home opener the following day.
Later that week, the Altitude will head back to Fayetteville for their second match-up before returning home for a four-game home stand beginning Nov. 29. The New Year will bring a balanced five road and five home game line-up for the month of January in addition to the two-game MLK celebration.
From February to March, the Altitude will compete in 18-games, eight home and 10 on the road. The Altitude will wrap up regular season play with four consecutive home dates in April including match-ups against the Dazzle, April 2 and the Columbus Riverdragons on Friday, April 6. The season will end as it began with a match-up against the Huntsville Flight Saturday, April 9 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Altitude season tickets are on sale now and feature numerous options for all entertainment needs. Fans can purchase season ticket packages for home games by calling the Altitude at 828-782-1000.
The 2005 NBDL post season will consist of the top four seeds advancing to a single-elimination tournament format after a regular season champion has been crowned. The top seed at the conclusion of the regular season will host the fourth seed, while No. 2 will host No. 3. The winners of those two games will play for the post-season title.
The NBDL, the NBA's minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), and NBDL Florida, Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.) and the Asheville Altitude (N.C.).
The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Twenty-eight NBDL players representing 39 callups, six coaches six game officials and three athletic trainers have been called up to the NBA since the start of the league's in November 2001.
Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the NBDL serves as a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 30 teams and a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
