A's Take Over First Place with 6-4 Win Over Warriors

February 19, 2011 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Brooklyn Aviators News Release

Brooklyn, NY - The New York Aviators prolonged their current hot streak on Saturday night in Federal Hockey League action and picked up their 19th consecutive win by beating the visiting Akwesasne Warriors by a score of 6-4. For New York, the win leapfrogs them past Akwesasne for sole possession of first place in the FHL with 62 points on the year and improves their record to 30-12-2.

Casey Mignone lead the scoring with 2 goals and 2 assists while Andrew Scampoli added a goal and 2 assists of his own.

The first period belonged to the Aviators. Even after Akwesasne's Maths Johansson beat A's goaltender Kevin Druce to open up the scoring just 1:46 in, three different Aviators scored a goal in the remainder of the frame to give New York the lead after the 1st period. Nick Vandenbeld lead things off for the A's to even things at 1-1 and Jesse Felten used some fancy stick handling to beat a Warrior defender on his way to a beautiful goal, his 20th of the year. Casey Mignone lit the lamp again with just 39 seconds remaining in the first to give New York a 3-1 lead heading to the 2nd period.

The two teams exchanged goals in the 2nd period. Mignone added his 2nd goal of the night to stretch the lead to 4-1 on his 19th tally of the year. But with just under 2 minutes remaining in the period, Akwesasne's Martin Beaulne received a pass in front of the net and drilled it home for his 24th goal of the year, pulling the Warriors back to within two with a score of 4-2 heading to the third and final period.

The final twenty minutes was filled with intensity and goal scoring but lacked drama as New York controlled their lead comfortably throughout the final period. Akwesasne's Migueal Delisle brought the Warriors back to within one just 52 seconds into the period. But this was as close as they would come as Scampoli joined in on the goal scoring later in the period to pad the A's lead. Christopher Holmes shortly added another insurance goal and became the 5th Aviator of the night to find the back of the net. Patrick Deraspe made things closer for the Warriors late in the 3rd but it wasn't enough as New York hung on for the win.

The A's hit the road to take on the Cape Cod Barons on Sunday night. The puck drop is schedules for 5:05 PM and can be watched live on the FHL Sports Network at LiveSportsVideo.com. For more information on the Aviators, log onto newyorkaviators.com, or call 718-758-7580.
