Danbury Whalers News Release

Danbury, Connecticut - Fill in the blanks. The Whalers with (more goals than Cape Cod) goals beat the visiting Barons who scored (number less than previous blank) goals on Saturday night. Since the Barons moved to Cape Cod at midseason it's been the same story when these two teams get together. Five games. Five Whalers wins. This time the correct answers for the blanks were six and four.

Two goals and an assist from forward Devin Guy helped propel Danbury to its 19th home win in 25 Danbury Ice Arena games. Two more from Alec Kirchner and solo tallies by Matt Caranci and Sean O'Malley completed the Danbury scoring.

In three of the last four games the opponents scored on their first shot of the game. And more than a few fans breathed a sigh of relief when Nick Niedert broke the hex, neatly turning aside Baron Skylar Christoffersen's shot 40 seconds into the contest. And surprise! This time it was the Whalers turn to score on their first shot as Devin Guy coming in from the right side carried the puck over the goal line and dumped it back to Matt Caranci for the first goal of the game. At 6:47 a Whaler defensive miscue allowed Cape Cod's Anthony Cosmano to intercept the puck at center ice, skate in unmolested and beat Niedert to the left side of the goal. The overall even play of the opening period was reflected in the shots on goal with each club taking ten.

The second period was a different story as the Cape Cod goal looked like bees on honey with dominating Danbury out shooting the Barons 26-12. At 2:40 of the second the Whalers regained the lead 2-1 when Devin Guy, on the weak side, netted a pass from Matt Caranci. At 6:05 the goal judge started warming his light up as soon as Whalers Marty Moucha and Alec Kirschner broke through the Barons defense. Moucha sent a picture perfect pass to the "Kid" for the shorthanded goal and a 3-1 Danbury cushion. Cape Cod got one of the goals back at 10:51 when Derek Scanlon, camped in front of the net converted a pass dug out of the corner. At 17:40 Devin Guy, playing garbage man, tucked in a puck that Baron goalie Matt Lopes dropped right in front of him, giving Danbury back a two goal lead, 4-2, heading into the locker room. Both goalies Niedert and Lopes deserve kudos for excellent net play, featuring all types of big time saves in this stanza.

In the third with the Whalers again swarming all over the goal at 8:42, Alec Kirschner picked up his 20thgoal of the season boosting Danbury's lead to 5-2. Cape Cod cut the gap to 5-3 just after the Whalers had killed off a power play as Skylar Christoffersen stuffed a goal between the wickets on Niedert. Playing shorthanded the Whalers increased the lead to 6-3 when Lucas Schott sent Sean O'Malley in on a breakaway at 13:47. That would have been the final, except for a Baron's power play goal from Quinn McIntosh with .01 seconds remaining.

Tale of the Whale: Homestand -The Whalers longest homestand of the season concludes tomorrow evening at 5:05 against the Akwesasne Warriors. Congratulations to: Section 102 for their 3-1 shootout victory over section 200's "Zoo Crew" during the first intermission. And to Niedert Nick, who earned his 100thprofessional win Friday night over the FHL's first place Akwesasne Warriors. Who's Hot - Devin Guy has a goal five straight games and 10 points in his last two. "Kid" Kirschner is red hot with 20 goals and 14 assists in his 14 games! Only three players have appeared in every game this season: Lucas Schott, Igor Karlov and Sean O'Malley. Hot Ticket - As everyone knows the best fans in the Federal Hockey League come to the Danbury Ice Arena as evidenced by the Whalers impressive home attendance total of 42,864 in 25 games, an average of 1,715 per game, accounting for almost half of the FHL's 90,875 combined total attendance.
