TORONTO, ON - The Toronto Arrows are pleased to announce the signing of fly-half Robbie Povey for the 2024 Major League Rugby season.

The signing follows the club's summer acquisition of the rights to the Canadian international from the Houston SaberCats in exchange for a first-round selection in the 2023 Major League Rugby Collegiate Draft.

"I'm really excited to be part of the team and looking forward to trying to get back to winning ways," said Povey. "Rugby's a game of fine margins, and you don't have to look any further than the majority of the recent World Cup knockout stage matches to see how close this sport can be."

"Unfortunately, the team fell on the wrong side of those results a couple of times this past season, but hopefully next year we'll be able to get on the right side of those and put some smiles back on the faces of Canadian rugby fans."

Povey, 27, spent the previous three MLR seasons with the SaberCats, where he made 33 appearances, scored seven tries, and kicked 16 conversions and two penalty goals for the Western Conference side after his arrival in 2021.

The six-foot, 195-pound back made his MLR bow with the Utah Warriors in 2020, getting in four matches before the pandemic brought an early end to the campaign.

Prior to moving stateside, Povey began his professional career with English sides Coventry (RFU Championship) and Sale FC (National League One) after developing in the senior academy program at Premiership Rugby's Northampton Saints.

The England-born Canadian international, who is eligible to play for Canada through his Montreal-born mother, has collected 15 caps and kicked 21 points since making his international debut against Chile in February 2017. He suited up for Canada in August, featuring in both of the national side's matches against Tonga in Nuku'alofa.

Povey previously donned the Maple Leaf with the national under-20 program in 2016.

"Robbie is a very capable playmaker who comes into our mix with a strong body of work both in MLR and overseas," said Tim Matthews, Toronto Arrows Vice President and General Manager. "We know Robbie's very excited to play professionally in his home nation and to help advance the sport in Canada. He's played very well for the national team this year and is poised to hit the ground running in 2024."

Domestically, he's featured for the Prairie Wolf Pack in the Canadian Rugby Championship, as well as with British Columbia club side Castaway Wanderers.

The club will be making additional signing announcements in the coming weeks as 2024 season preparations continue to build.
