Toronto Arrows News Release
TORONTO, ON - The Toronto Arrows are pleased to announce that hooker Tyler Wong has re-signed with the club for the 2024 Major League Rugby season.
Wong, 24, is returning to the Arrows for a second campaign after joining the club midway through the 2023 MLR season.
"I'm looking forward to coming back for Year 2 with the Arrows," said Wong. "We've got a great group with a chip on our shoulder. We're eager to flip the page from last season and ready to show out for Canadian rugby."
The six-foot-two, 230-pound forward featured in five matches (three starts) throughout his debut season as a professional, producing 117 carry metres on 19 carries, 48 ruck arrivals, 24 tackles, two defenders beaten and an offload.
Following the 2023 MLR campaign, Wong earned a call-up to the Canadian national side for its August tour to Fiji and Tonga. He previously represented Canada at the under-20 level as an under-ager in 2018.
Wong arrived at the Arrows via Rugby Canada's national development academy, where he had been honing his skills since 2020. Prior to his time with the Pacific Pride, he had come through the University of Victoria rugby program - a spell with the Vikes that was highlighted by winning the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship title in 2019 alongside Arrows teammate James O'Neill.
"We're excited to have Tyler returning for 2024," said Tim Matthews, Toronto Arrows Vice President and General Manager. "He made great strides in his game when he joined us partway through last season, and is poised to continue that upward trajectory."
"Tyler has a real appetite for work and can see the bigger picture, striving for improvement in all areas of his game. He has a bright future ahead."
Born in Costa Rica and raised in North Vancouver, B.C., Wong got his start in rugby at his hometown Carson Graham Secondary School.
The club will be making additional signing announcements in the coming weeks as 2024 season preparations continue to build.
