November 7, 2023 - Major League Rugby (MLR)
Toronto Arrows News Release
TORONTO, ON - The Toronto Arrows are pleased to announce that flanker Lucas Rumball has re-signed with the club for the 2024 Major League Rugby season.
Rumball, 28, is returning to the Arrows for a sixth campaign after featuring in 54 matches (51 starts) - the second-highest appearance tally in franchise history - for the club since its inaugural season in 2019.
The 2022 club captain leads the franchise in tackles (696; 93.3% completion) and breakdown steals (49); Rumball is the only Arrows player to have hit the 600-tackle milestone, and his work at the breakdown has been consistently among the league's top performers, with only two other players in team history cracking double-digits for poaches (Tomas de la Vega, 15; James O'Neill, 13).
The Scarborough, Ont. native has also accumulated 2,001 carry metres on 411 carries, 49 defenders beaten, 24 offloads, and five tries over his five years with the team, notably earning All-MLR 1st XV honours in 2021. He is one of only three Arrows to have hit 50 appearances for the club, joining fellow half-centurions Mike Sheppard (59) and Paul Ciulini (50).
Internationally, Rumball has amassed 49 caps (46 starts) for Canada since making his test debut against Uruguay in February 2016, including featuring at the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The flanker also represented Canada at two World Rugby Under-20 Trophy tournaments, first as an under-ager in 2014, and again in 2015 with the captaincy role. He was named Rugby Canada's Young Player of the Year, Male in 2014.
Arrow #1 is a graduate of the Ontario Blues senior men's provincial program and the Queen's Gaels post-secondary program. While representing the Gaels, Rumball was named Ontario University Athletics' Most Valuable Player (2015) and Rookie of the Year (2013).
He played his grassroots rugby with Balmy Beach.
The club will be making additional signing announcements in the coming weeks as 2024 season preparations continue to build.
