(North Little Rock, AR) - The Arkansas Twisters spent the first month of the season on the road. The team made up for lost time in its home opener by defeating Corpus Christi 93-19 in front of 5,555 fans at Allstate Field at Alltel Arena.
Corpus Christi led 7-0 to start the game when Brandon Hussey tipped a pass from John De Los Santos to himself and ran it 30 yards for the score. Arkansas responded when Terrance Freeney ran 35 yards on the Twisters first play from scrimmage.
The Sharks led 10-6 after Chris Onorato hit a 48 yard field goal, but Corpus Christi didn't score again until the third quarter. In the meantime, Arkansas ran off 46 unanswered points to run away with the game.
Twisters quarterback Brian Villanueva complete just nine of 12 pass attempts, but racked up 158 yards and six total touchdowns and earned Schutt Offensive Player of the Game. Arkansas scored on every possession in the game until backup quarterback Davon Vinson threw an interception in the third quarter with Arkansas up 66-12.
Arkansas fullback Terrance Freeney ran for a Twisters record 89 yards, besting teammate Kevin Williams' record of 88. Freeney added a 45 yard touchdown run to his previous 35 yard run. The longer run is the fifth longest run from scrimmage in league history. Reggie Cooley finished with three tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup and earned ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors. Robert Kilow earned U. S. Army Ironman of the Game honors with two touchdown receptions and a 49 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. William's earned Cutters Catch of the Game with his one handed interception that he returned for a touchdown.
The Twisters scored the most points since 102 points against Tulsa in 2002 and one of 10 teams to score more than 90 points in a single game in league history.
De Los Santos finished the game by completing six of 21 passes for 74 yards, one touchdown and one interception but left the game at the end of the first half with an apparent knee injury and didn't return. Darren Haliburton completed seven of 20 passes for 46 yards and two interceptions in relief. Brandon Hussey led the Sharks receivers with four catches for 69 yards and a score.
Arkansas (3-1) will put its three game win streak on the line against Laredo on Saturday, May 5th.
