Phoenix Rising FC News Release
(July 1, 2016) - Despite Arizona United Soccer Club's positive momentum heading into the match, the club fell to Tulsa Roughnecks FC, 3-2, on the road. The loss snaps Arizona's four-match unbeaten streak.
Both of Arizona United's goals were off the head of forward Long Tan. In the 28th minute, with the club down 2-0, midfielder Tony Cascio got the ball wide and to the left of the net. He fired a cross into the middle of the box and Tan headed the ball inside the far-right post and cut the lead to 2-1.
Tan's second goal came after halftime. Trailing 3-1, defender Adam West sent a free kick into the box from the right side of the field. Tan met the pass in the middle of the box and headed it toward the far left post, past the goalkeeper who was stuck in his spot, to make it 3-2.
Tulsa went up 1-0 early in the match when the team's leading scorer, Sammy Ochoa, beat goalkeeper Jordan Stagmiller in the 7th minute. Then Bryce Taylor put the Roughnecks up 2-0 seven minutes later.
The eventual game-winning goal was scored in the 40th minute. Following a throw in turnover by Arizona United, Tulsa's Christian Mata received the ball as he ran through the defense and then dribbled around Stagmiller to score and make it 3-1.
United almost pulled off a draw in stoppage time. It was Tan again, nearly scoring his third goal of the match. But his header toward the inside of the far right post was punched away by Tulsa goalkeeper Alex Mangels
Arizona United falls to 4-6-5. With 17 points on the season, the club is currently three points out of the final playoff spot. Arizona Untied returns to action on Saturday, July 9, against Swope Park Rangers KC. The match kicks off at 7:30 P.M. at the Peoria Sports Complex.
