Archbishop Rummel Wrestling Team Named VooDoo Prep Athlete of the Week

NEW ORLEANS (February 3, 2011) - The New Orleans VooDoo and WGNO dubbed the Archbishop Rummel High School (Metairie, La.) wrestling team as this week's "VooDoo Prep Athlete of the Week," announced the organization on Thursday afternoon.
The Archbishop Rummel wrestling team captured its first ever Catholic League District Championship this season with a 73-6 victory over Archbishop Shaw this past Wednesday night. The Raiders will head to the LHSAA State Championships on February 11 and 12 in Bossier City at the Centurytel Center in search of their first ever state title in the sport.
The Raiders have a total of six seniors set to compete for the state championship with five of them being ranked either first or second in their weight class, respectively. The team dedicated their season to Christian Romig - brother of senior wrestler Philip Romig - who passed away on January 5, 2011 in Afghanistan, serving as a specialist in the United States Army.
Phillip, a team captain for the Raiders, followed in his older brother Christian's footsteps, having wrestled at Grace King High School before joining the Army. Soon thereafter learning of Christian's passing, the Raider wrestling team dedicated the rest of their season to Christian, 24, and the Romig family.
"We were at a meet against Brother Martin when Phillip and his brother Lee, who is a manager for us, found out about what had happened to their brother. They were both excused immediately and told to go home to be with their family," said Rummel head wrestling coach Rod Cusachs.
"As a team after the match, we met in the locker room and decided that we would dedicate our season to Phillip's and Lee's brother Christian, and the entire Romig family. We have carried them close to our hearts, and have had them in our prayers as they mourn."
The Raider wrestling team will be featured tonight on the 6:30 p.m. sportscast on WGNO ABC 26, and the segment will be archived on the internet at www.abc26.com/voodoo.

Nomination-to-selection process on a weekly basis:
Wednesday: Nominations due at 10 a.m.; top three nominees announced at 12 p.m.; poll appears on WGNO website for public vote;
Thursday thru Sunday: Public vote continues; online voting closes at 5 p.m. and prep athlete of the week is then notified.
Thursday: New Orleans VooDoo and WGNO Prep Athlete of the Week is announced via www.aflvoodoo.com in a written release; WGNO interviews prep athlete of the week.
Thursday: Segment on prep athlete of the week appears in 6:30 p.m. sportscast. Segment is also archived at www.abc26.com/voodoo
