Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - On Saturday, April 10th at 7pm, the Tacoma Rainiers will open the gates to Cheney Stadium to celebrate S.H.I.E.L.D. (Safety, Honor, Integrity, Enforce, Leadership, Defend) NIGHT, a baseball game tribute to and celebration of the lives of Western Washington's fallen officers.

In wake of the tragic events of this past year, the Tacoma Rainiers will be honoring the service and sacrifice of Sgt. Mark Renninger, Officers Tina Griswold, Ronald Owens, Greg Richards, Timothy Brenton, and Deputy Kent Mundell. All single game ticket proceeds from the April 10th game will be donated to the Lakewood Police Independent Guild (LPIG) Charitable Fund to assist the families of fallen officers.

"We want to see the park packed with police officers, families, and fans to raise as much money as possible for the fund." said Aaron Artman, Rainiers president. "We want to make S.H.I.E.L.D. NIGHT an annual tradition. Our law enforcement personnel are too often underappreciated. The outpouring of support and appreciation that the Puget Sound has shown thus far has been nothing short of amazing. We want to be a conductor to keep that support strong and directed."

S.H.I.E.L.D. NIGHT will open with Metro Pierce and Pierce County Honor Guard presenting our nation's colors. An officer of the Lakewood PD will be singing God Bless America. Rainiers players will be wearing special jerseys that will be autographed and auctioned during and after the game. Lakewood Police Department patches with the initials 'MR,' 'TG,' 'RO,' and 'GR' will remain on the Rainiers jerseys throughout the entire 2010 season. To date, there are over 200 officers from the Lakewood Police Department attending and several other groups of law enforcement from the South Sound.

"The events of the last six months have changed how law enforcement is viewed and impacted the safety of our communities. This event will allow law enforcement officers from several agencies to come together to support the families of our fallen brothers, but it also reminds each of us of the bond we all share." said Bryan Klingele, a member of the Federal Way Police Officers Guild, who will be attending the event. "The support of this event will remind not only family members, but the community as a whole we will not forget."
