Antoine Mason plays the hero with late game sharp shooting to sink the St. John's Edge

ST. JOHN'S, NL. - The Halifax Hurricanes presented by Eastlink working on a back-to-back in St. John's taking on the Edge at Mile One Centre, the Hurricanes led by shooting guard Antoine Mason's 37 point and 15 rebound performance to get the split in the two game matchup 101-97.

The Hurricanes get off to a great start in the first quarter, led by CJ Washington who shot five for six from the field, and finished with 11 points in the quarter. The Edge were held to eight for 22 from the field, trailing the 'Canes 26-22 after one.

In the second quarter, Antoine Mason picked up the teams offense. Mason scored 11 points on four of six shooting from the field, along with five rebounds. Chris Johnson also picked up his game hitting two threes, finishing with eight points.Halifax shot five for nine from three-point range in the quarter. Karrington Ward finished with seven points for the Edge, Halifax took at 57-49 lead to the locker room.

The two teams shooting percentages would go down in the third quarter, Mason would once again lead the way for Halifax finishing with seven points and five rebounds. Hurricanes shot eight for 21 as a team from the field. The Edge were led by Jesse Jones hitting on two for five from the field and seven points. St. John's as a team went seven for 20 from the field. Halifax took a 75-69 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Antoine Mason and Jesse Jones would go to battle down the stretch. At 9:31, Mason would score six straight points to push the lead up to nine with under eight minutes remaining in regulation. With 1:49 remaining Jesse Jones hits on back-to-back threes to cut the Hurricanes lead to two with 1:03 left, Jones finished with a team high 24 points. Tied game at 97 apiece with eight seconds left and Halifax possession, Antoine Mason plays the hero and hits a three-pointer and is fouled on the play. Mason would go to the line and complete the rare four point play to give the Hurricanes the win. The Hurricanes snap a three game losing streak to pick up their third win on the season.

Halifax would shoot 50 percent on the night, including eight for 19 from three-point range, and nine for 13 from the free throw line as a team. St. John's would shoot 45 percent from the field, including six for 19 from three-point range, and 17 for 21 from the free throw line.

Halifax's next game will be at the Scotiabank Centre on Wednesday February 5th versus the Island Storm in a makeup game that was cancelled on January 8th due to inclement weather, tip-off is scheduled for 7pm AST and sponsored by Killam Apartments REIT.
