Another tough loss for the BayBears

BIRMINGHAM, AL – After leading through the first seven innings in their game against Birmingham, the Mobile BayBears (2-9) gave up another late lead, falling to the Barons 3-2. With the BayBears leading 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, reliever Bryan Gaal (0-3) gave up a two-run homerun to Barons' third baseman Ryan Hankins with two outs.

The BayBears took an early 1-0 lead in the first as Khalil Greene drove in Vince Faison from second base with a double off of the left-center field wall. Greene would later add two more hits in the game to finish 3-5. Mobile added their second run when Jake Gautreau drove home Rich Gomez with his first of two hits on the night.

Mobile starter, Steve Watkins continued an impressive run by BayBears starting pitchers. Watkins threw five and one-thirds innings, allowing only one unearned run and three base hits. Entering tonight's game, BayBears starting pitchers had posted a 1.19 ERA, but Mobile had just one win in those games.

The BayBears and Barons will play game two of their four game series Tuesday night as Brad Baker (0-2; 10.80) will start on the mound for Mobile, against Birmingham's Brian West (0-0; 11.25). Game time from Hoover Metropolitan Stadium is 7:00.

NOTES...The loss marks the fourth time this season the BayBears have lost a game in their opponents last at bat...Mobile now falls to 1-6 in one-run games this season.
