Brandon, Manitoba - The Brandon Wheat Kings' CIBC "Read to Succeed" literacy initiative presented by the Western Hockey League club, turned out to be another overwhelming success during the 2012-13 campaign

The program, which was introduced by the Wheat Kings, CIBC and the Brandon School Division eight years ago and designed after a pilot project introduced by the WHL's Vancouver Giants in 2002, featured several members of the hockey club visiting schools throughout Brandon and surrounding area.

Student participation came in at virtually 100% with many students exceeding the programs required by the participating schools.

The program, made possible by the generous support of CIBC, involved close to thirty schools, 75 classrooms and approximately 1,200 students. The program encourages students in grades two to five to spend extra time reading - both at home and in school.

Several members of the Wheat Kings including veterans Jens Meilleur and Curtis Honey visited the schools to talk to the students about the importance of reading and education. Upon successfully completing the literacy challenge, introduced by each classroom teacher, the players rewarded them with CIBC Wheat King bookmarks and complimentary tickets to an upcoming game. A 19-year old native of Elie, Manitoba, Meilleur has visited close to eighty classrooms since joining the program in 2010-11. The 3-year WHL veteran was recently nominated for the League's Humanitarian of the Year Award.

Others that participated throughout the year included Eric Roy, Tyler Yaworski, Corbin Boes, Jason Swryipa, Nick Walters, Nick Buonassisi as well as western Manitobans Ryan Pulock (Grandview), Quintin Lisoway (Neepawa) and Chad Robinson (Minnedosa).

In addition to a number of Brandon schools, the Wheat Kings visited a variety of rural schools in such communities as Souris, MacGregor, Wawanesa, Minnedosa, Forrest, Alexander, Oak Lake, Onanole, Carberry, Erickson, Killarney and Deloraine.
