Bakersfield Blitz News Release
Bakersfield - Bakersfield Blitz sack leader Jerry Turner signed with the Grand Rapids Rampage of the AFL, the Blitz announced today.
Turner helped lead the Blitz as the number one defensive team in the af2 with a record 16 sacks for 88 yards in the regular season. As the Blitz team advanced to the second round of the playoffs, Turner accumulated 3 additional sacks for 20 yards in their first playoff win against the Central Valley Coyotes. Turner also recorded 27 tackles for the Blitz during the regular season.
Turner's momentous 2006 sack record is only part of the story. Turner's overall 19 sacks tied him with former af2 lineman Greg Taylor for most sacks in league history for a career record of 37.5 sacks. In August, Turner was honored with the af2's U.S. Army Lineman of the Year award at the ArenaCup in Puerto Rico in recognition of his season accomplishments.
When Turner packed his bags and moved out of his Bakersfield apartment in August with high hopes to sign in the AFL he said, "I had a great time playing for the Blitz. Bakersfield welcomed me like family and I hope the team does well in the future."
Turner's high hopes became a reality today, which also means good things for his family. Turner was quoted in the Bakersfield Californian in the beginning of the season saying, "This is my last year playing in the Deuce, man. I've got a little girl to feed."
The Blitz look forward to seeing more players advance to higher levels of football after their time with the Blitz organization. "Our goal is not only to create a winning team in the af2 league, but to also develop players for the next level of football." Coach Gary Compton said. "We are successful as a team when numerous players are leaving us to sign with the AFL."
Season tickets for the 2007 Blitz season are on sale now with season seats as low as $45. For more information, please call 377-BLITZ (2548) or visit www.bakersfieldblitz.com.
