Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors had a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Berkshire Black Bears scored three runs in the ninth to win the game 5-4 Saturday night in Pittsfield.
Allentown got out to a 2-0 lead after five innings, scoring a run in the top of the second, when Greg Stevens doubled in Greg Schimdt, who had begun the inning with a walk. The Ambassadors scored in the fifth when Jorge Diaz reached on a fielder's choice, with Cedrick Harris out at second, and then stole second and third base, scoring on a Vic Davilla single. But, the Ambassadors would leave the bases loaded in the inning.
Berkshire got a run back in the bottom of the fifth and then tied the game in the sixth inning on a solo home run from Chris Briones, his fifth. Allentown responded right away, with Davilla hitting a solo home run in the seventh off Black Bear starter Rick Guttormson. It was his ninth home run of the season. Davilla finished the game 4-5 with two RBI and the home run. The Ambassadors would get another in the seventh, when Ryan Bordenick singled with two out, followed by a Schmidt walk and a Tito Cruz RBI single. But they would again leave the bases loaded in the inning. The Ambassadors stranded eleven runners in the game.
That set the stage for the ninth. Starter Nolan Fry came out to begin the inning, having retired eight in a row. But he gave up back-to-back singles to Chris Briones and Manny Crespo, and Jose Guerrero came in to pitch. Shane Hopper bunted and Guerrero threw the ball over the head of Jorge Diaz at first, allowing Briones to score, and putting runners at second and third with no one out. Pete Paciorek then hit a ground ball to Davilla, who threw out Crespo at the plate to preserve the lead. Then Ryan Jones singled, scoring Hopper and tying the game. After Brady Williams was intentionally walked to load the bases, Allan Schrum struck out looking for the second out. But then Jose Mateo singled home Paciorek to win the game for Berkshire. Mateo finished the night 3-5 with the game winning RBI.
The loss is the fourth in a row for the Ambassadors, who fall to 2-7 in the second half. Berkshire improves to 3-5. Shane Waroff got the win, he is now 3-0, while Jose Guerrero took the loss. He is 0-2. The two teams play the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon, with Miguel Perez taking the mound for Allentown.
