Amarillo Bulls News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX - The Amarillo Bulls played one of their better first periods of the season on Saturday night, but they couldn't keep it going and fell to the Lone Star Brahmas 6-1 at NYTEX Sports Center.
The loss extended the Bulls winless drought to 0-7-2 in their last nine games and ends a long three week road trip. The Bulls will now return home for a pair of games next weekend at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
In North Richland Hills, the Bulls played a flawless opening 20 minutes, but it was the second period, and two goals less than a minute apart, that broke open a close 2-1 game at the time which was their undoing. Jake Houston had the lone Bulls goal on the power play in the second period. Jacob Weatherly faced over 30 shots and took the loss in goal.
What a terrific start to the game for the Amarillo Bulls as they had the tough Lone Star Brahmas on the ropes for much of the opening period. The Bulls couldn't sneak one past goaltender Corbin Kasperski but came close on a couple of occasions as Nicholas Bohatiuk and Joey Molinario missed chances. The Bulls did a great job defensively clearing the puck out of their zone and not giving Jacob Weatherly much to do. The Bulls doubled the shots on the Brahmas 8-4.
Lone Star came out fired up in the middle period and raced out to a 2-0 advantage thanks to a pair in the first eight minutes. The Bulls cut the deficit in half when Jake Houston carried the puck in over the blue line and his shot dribbled through the arm of the Brahmas goaltender. The power play goal was assisted by newcomer Bohatiuk. Lone Star raced in off the ensuing face-off and restored a two goal lead, converting an attempt in front of the net. The Brahmas rounded out the period scoring with another marker a short time later. The Bulls were outshot 18-7 in the period.
The third period saw the Brahmas add two more goals including one shorthanded to notch their second win at home and sixth win of the season.
The Lone Star Brahmas outshot the Amarillo Bulls 37-16. One of the other bright spots on the night was the penalty killing as the Brahmas didn't score a power play goal in five attempts.
