Amado Guevara named as MLS Player of the Week

August 22, 2005 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - New York Red Bulls News Release

SECAUCUS, NJ (Monday, August 22, 2005) MetroStars midfielder Amado Guevara today was selected as the Honda MLS Player of the Week for Week 21 which ended on Sunday, August 21. Guevara recorded his second hat-trick of the season, helping the Metros come from behind to earn a 3-3 tie against Chivas USA on Sunday evening at Giants Stadium. This is Guevaras second Player of the Week honor of the 2005 season and the third of his career.

Guevara started the scoring off scoring on a penalty kick in the games 5th minute of play. After midfielder Eddie Gaven was tripped by Chivas USAs Ramon Ramirez, Guevara stepped to the spot and beat goalkeeper Brad Guzan to the keeper's right for his team-leading seventh goal.

Chivas then scored three straight goals before the half and kept the 3-1 lead until Guevara scored on his second penalty kick of the game in the 69th minute. Gaven again was tripped in the box, and Guevara again beat Guzan to his right.

Chivas appeared to have secured the victory, but Guevara rescued the Metros with a brilliant shot in the fourth minute of injury time. Youri Djorkaeff lined up to take a direct kick from 30 yards, and instead of shooting, passed the ball to his left, where Guevara hit a first-time bending shot that hit the far side net, past the diving attempt by Guzan.

With his hat trick last weekend MetroStars midfielder Amado Guevara became the first player in MetroStars history to record two hat tricks in the same season (4/30 @ Colorado, 8/21 vs. Chivas). He also tied the MetroStars record for most hat tricks by a MetroStars player in team history (Clint Mathis).

The league record for the most hat tricks by a player in a single season is three (Stern John 98, Cobi Jones 98, Diego Serna 00). Coincidently, Guevara is the first person to have two or more hat tricks in a single season since Serna did it in 2000.

The tie helped the Metros extend their home unbeaten streak to nine games, and pulled the Metros to within five points of the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Guevaras nine goals places him third in the Budweiser Golden Boot race, only two back of goal-scoring leader Jeff Cunningham (Colorado).

Guevara narrowly edged out Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan and Kansas City Wizards forward Scott Sealy for the weekly award. The Honda Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected every week throughout the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
