Asheville Altitude News Release
ASHEVILLE, N.C., Feb. 10, 2004 - The Asheville Altitude ended its season-long losing streak to the Charleston Lowgators as they poured in a team-record 120 points, cruising to a 19-point (120-101) victory Tuesday night at the Asheville Civic Center. Asheville also set an NBDL record with 35 assists and tied their team record for points in a half with 64 in the first period of play.
Charleston's Alpha Bangura led all scorers with 23 points, on 10-15 shooting, and five rebounds and Asheville's Player of the Game Greg Stevenson gave a shining performance on his birthday, leading the team with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
The contest started as a game of runs as Asheville went on a 29-13 tear over the first and second quarters, building a lead as high 22 points. Charleston answered with a 7-0 run of its own as Ime Udoka scored all seven points, but the Altitude closed the half with a 9-3 run following two consecutive three-point baskets. Asheville shot a sizzling 66.7% from the field in the first half.
Asheville opened the second half with a 10-4 run to push the lead to 29 and put Charleston out of the game early. The Lowgators pulled to within 16 twice in the fourth quarter, but never got any closer as the Altitude connected perfectly on 10-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
"It's always good to get a win, especially at home," said Greg Stevenson, "but it's really good to get it over Charleston because they've been bullying us a little bit."
A total of seven Asheville players reached double figures in scoring, with Lavor Postell also pouring in 19 points on 7-10 shooting and 3-4 from three-point range, seven rebounds and five assists. Desmond Penigar registered 17 points and six rebounds and Rusty LaRue added 16 points, six assists and five rebounds coming off the bench. Kareem Reid posted a double-double, dishing out a game-high 10 assists and dropping in 10 points as Asheville shot 60% from the field as a team.
"It's crazy how much fun you can have when you're playing together and pulling for each other," said Stevenson. "When we play together, we're pretty hard to beat."
Three Charleston scorers topped the 20-point mark in the losing effort. In addition to Bangura, Tierre Brown poured in 22 points and handed out a team-high five assists while Ime Udoka chipped in 20 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Rolan Roberts was the only other Lowgator to reach double-figures in scoring, adding 10 points and four rebounds.
After opening the season 2-9, the Altitude creeps closer to the .500 mark at 11-12 as they travel to Roanoke to face the Dazzle tomorrow night. Meanwhile, Charleston drops its fourth straight road game and will return home to host the Fayetteville Patriots on Saturday.
