Altitude overwhelm Patriots to snap losing skid
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Asheville Altitude rebounded from a three game losing streak to overpower the Fayetteville Patriots, 98-86, Saturday night at the Asheville Civic Center.
We came out with better intensity tonight, said Altitude head coach Joey Meyer. We were embarrassed by our performance last night and showed the right enthusiasm even in the locker room during pre-game.
The Altitude dominated throughout the first half, leading by as much as 22 points. NBDL Player of the Month for November, Antonio Meeking continued his torrid pace scoring more points (14) in the first quarter than the entire Fayetteville roster combined (10). By the second quarter, the Altitude had connected for more than half of their baskets from the field (53%) and every Altitude player had posted two or more points.
The Patriots closed the lead to within nine following a 16-4 run to open the second half. Out performing the Altitude starters by 10 points, Jon Smith was key to the Patriots third quarter rally netting eight of his final 15 points in the quarter.
We lost a little energy following halftime, said Player of the Game Tonny Dobbins. We understand that good things happen on the defensive end of the court and tonight we got everyone involved.
It was the Altitude bench that overcame the surge as sixth-man Ron Slay posted 15 points in the quarter to extend Ashevilles to12 points. Meeking led the Altitude with 18 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes of play. Slay chipped in with 17 and Lenny Stokes finished with 13. Tony Kitchings fell shy of a double-double grabbing 10 rebounds in addition to registering seven points.
Fayettevilles David Young led all scorers with 19 points and was also perfect from free-throw line going 5-of-5 from behind the charity stripe. Omar Cook and Chris Brooks added 11 points and Ernest Brown pulled down a game high 13 rebounds to go along with eight points.
The Altitude will host the Roanoke Dazzle Tuesday, Dec. 7 at the Asheville Civic Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Patriots will also meet the Dazzle in their next outing, Thursday, Dec. 9 at Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville beginning at 7:30 p.m.
