Asheville Altitude News Release
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Isiah Victor posted a career-high 34 points as the Roanoke Dazzle knocked off the Asheville Altitude 119-110 Saturday night at the Asheville Civic Center. Victors' career game comes one night after Roanoke guard Matt Carroll torched the Altitude for 30 points.
"We played lousy and haven't played well defensively in a while," said Altitude head coach Joey Meyer. "And that's what this team is built on. We've never been a great offensive team, but we get a lot of scoring opportunities by playing good defense."
Unlike Friday's game, the Dazzle did not need a late run to pull away from the Altitude. Sung-Yoon Bang gave Roanoke (9-6) its biggest lead of the night at 19 points nailing a baseline jumper with 7:22 left in the game.
Altitude point guard Brandin Knight helped to close the gap to five points with less than a minute left to play netting 14 of his team-high 25 points in the fourth quarter. But the Dazzle kept the Altitude's comeback at bay shooting 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. Corey Alexander led the way going 9-of-12 from the free-throw line in the final stanza.
"We let them get too many open shots," Knight said. "We played to their advantage with smaller players and they were able to run their offense better than we were. They just played better than we did tonight."
Victor was huge in helping the Dazzle open up a sizeable lead knocking down 18 points in the third quarter.
"He was long and athletic out there tonight," Meyer said. "And when he didn't have shot opportunities, he did a great job of passing the ball around so his teammates could get open shots."
Roanoke shot a blistering 54.5 percent (42-of-77) from the field going 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point line. Alexander made sure the Dazzle players were getting good looks at the basket finishing with a game-high 12 assists to go with 27 points.
Asheville shot slightly lower than 50 percent (49.4) from the field Saturday, but couldn't overcome an abysmal third quarter of shooting (38.9 percent) to get back in the game.
Lenny Stokes added 19 points for the Altitude while Antonio Meeking chipped in with 18 points. Knight also dished out six assists and pulled down five rebounds before fouling out late in the game.
Asheville will host the Fayetteville Patriots in their next outing Tuesday, January 11 at the Asheville Civic Center beginning at 7:00 p.m.
