Asheville Altitude News Release
ASHEVILLE, N.C., December 2, 2003 - Tobe Carberry posted 19 points against his former team, the Charleston Lowgators, in a disappointing loss 111-105, Tuesday night at the Asheville Civic Center. The Lowgators, who entered the game winless, registered their first victory of the season as the Altitude dropped their second consecutive home game (1-2).
The game was an offensive battle throughout the first half before Charleston went on an 11-0 run in the third quarter to turn a one-point deficit into a 10-point lead (73-63). Asheville fought back by the fourth, pulling within two points on several occasions, but Charleston had an answer for every bucket down the stretch, securing a six point final margin.
The Lowgators dominated the defensive boards, keeping the Altitude off the glass until 1:42 remained in the first half. Second chance points favored the Lowgators, doubling Asheville's (22-11).
"For five possessions in a row, we fought back and were one step away," said head coach Joey Meyer, "but we just couldn't get it."
Both offenses exploded throughout the game, with six players scoring in double figures for the Lowgators and five for the Altitude. The final score of the game was just four points shy of the NBDL record of 220 points for a combined score. Many of Asheville's points came from the charity stripe as they shot 88% (22-25) from the line.
Carberry, who competed 34 games last season for the Lowgators, scored 12 points in the second half to earn player of the game honors. Brandon Kurtz came off of the bench to score 19 points for Asheville. Kareem Reid posted his first double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 10 assists.
Despite early foul trouble that kept him sidelined for much of the game, Altitude leading scorer, Desmond Penigar, finished with 16 points and two steals in 21 minutes of play, connecting on his first six shots. Lavor Postell ended his early season scoring drought with 12 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Tierre Brown of Charleston led all scorers with 22 points, six assists and three steals. Every player on the Lowgator's squad scored, including Carl English who poured in 14 points in 17 minutes of play. Hiram Fuller and Ime Udoka both posted 16 points. Udoka pulled down seven rebounds while Fuller had five.
"They were hungry," said Carberry. "They were running and getting rebounds and we had problems blocking them out."
The Altitude and Lowgators will meet again this Friday at 7:30 p.m. when Asheville travels to the North Charleston Coliseum. Asheville returns home Dec. 9 when they host their second triple-header of the season, featuring the Asheville High and T.C. Roberson girls and boys teams in pre-game match-ups. Asheville takes the floor against the Columbus Riverdragons (0-3) immediately following the boy's match-up.
