Altitude dominates Lowgators to extend win streak to four

ASHEVILLE, N.C., March 9, 2004 - The Asheville Altitude used a 26-1 second quarter burst to take control of a 122-103 victory over the first place Charleston Lowgators at the Asheville Civic Center Tuesday night. The win is Asheville's fourth straight and improves them to 18-15, only one-and-a-half games behind the Lowgators.

Charleston's Damone Brown led all scorers with 24 points and six rebounds in the losing effort. Asheville's Player of the Game Brandon Kurtz paced the Altitude with his third consecutive double-double, pouring in 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Asheville took advantage of hot shooting as they connected on 56-of-80 of their baskets. Charleston couldn't match the pace as they shot 39.4 percent from the field, making just 37 of their 94 attempts. The Altitude, who led by as much as 25 points in the contest, dominated in the paint as well, outscoring the Lowgators 68-40 down low and out-rebounding them 48-38.

"We're just playing with so much confidence right now," said Asheville Head Coach Joey Meyer. "Everyone thought we were dead after we had the three call-ups, but these guys looked at the situation as an opportunity and have really stepped up."

The Altitude had seven players reach double figures in scoring as Antonio Meeking and Reed Rawlings each registered 17 points. Lavor Postell tallied 15 points, six rebounds and three assists and newcomer Lenny Stokes added 14 points, eight of which came in eight minutes of Asheville's dominating second quarter run. Brandin Knight chipped in 13 points and Greg Stevenson contributed 12 points to the win.

Tierre Brown netted 23 points and handed out a game-high nine assists for the Lowgators as Alpha Bangura added 19 points. Ime Udoka chipped in 13 points and five rebounds. Charleston newcomer Rico Hill added 10 points.

Asheville headed to Roanoke immediately after the game for their second of four games in five days. Charleston returns home to host the Columbus Riverdragons Friday, March 12.

"This is a make-or-break week for us," said Asheville's Brandon Kurtz. "I think it's our most important week and we want to come out with a good record."
