Altitude Brings NBDL Draft Closer to Home
October 31, 2003 - NBA G League (G League)
Asheville Altitude News Release
The Asheville Altitude will host an NBDL Draft Party on Thursday, November 6, from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at TGI Fridays located next to the Doubletree Biltmore Hotel. Open to the public, the event provides fans, season ticket holders, corporate partners and local media an opportunity to listen via conference call and webstreaming as the Altitude's coaching staff make their 2003 player selections.
"To host a local draft event in the Asheville Community for the second year in a row is an exciting experience to our organization," said Altitude Head Coach Joey Meyer. "Hosting an event like this gives our fans a great opportunity to step inside and look behind the scenes to see how our team is built."
The local event will provide fans an opportunity to watch head coach Joey Meyer and assistant coach Mike Sanders in the "War-Room" as they make their deciding 2003 draft selections. The event will feature games with prizes, entertainment by the team's official dance team, the Attitude, and open discussions on all draftees.
The league's third draft will take place over 10 rounds and be conducted via conference call from various locations in each of the six NBDL markets beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The selection process will operate with each team having one pick in each of the 10 rounds. No trades will be permitted during the draft and only players signed to an NBDL Standard Player Contact will be eligible to be drafted.
NBA director of scouting, Marty Blake and son Ryan, compliment the event by providing player commentary to the webcast between selections.
The Huntsville Flight will make the first selection, followed by the Columbus Riverdragons. The Altitude will select third followed by the Roanoke Dazzle, North Charleston Lowgators and the Fayetteville Patriots.
The Altitude hosted their local player tryouts Oct. 25-26 at the UNC-Asheville Recreation Center. Five of the 60 talented players, who participated in the local event, were submitted to league officials and upon approval, up to three qualified candidates could be invited to take part in the team's training camp that gets underway in Asheville Nov. 8.
The Altitude opens preseason exhibition play Nov. 18 on the road against the University of Missouri, followed by a trip to the University of Louisville on Nov. 23.
The Altitude opens the 2003-04 regular season Nov. 28 at Columbus, followed by the regular-season home opener against Huntsville on Nov. 30 as part of a "Mountain Hoops Tipoff" that will feature the UNC-Asheville men's and women's basketball teams at the Asheville Civic Center. The Altitude game is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
