Altitude advances to NBDL championship game

ASHEVILLE, N.C., April 17, 2004 - The Asheville Altitude outlasted the Fayetteville Patriots 116-111 Saturday night at the Asheville Civic Center to advance in the finals of the NBDL Delta Airlines Post Season Classic.

Fayetteville?s Kenny Satterfield led all scorers with 33 points, including 6-of-14 shooting from three-point range in the loss. Brandon Kurtz paced Asheville with 24 points and eight rebounds coming off the bench.

Despite a 22-8 spurt by the Altitude to open the second quarter, the game was a tight struggle throughout. The Patriots trimmed the lead to eight points by halftime and then opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run to take a four point lead (68-64).

Asheville was nursing a five point lead early in the fourth quarter before Kareem Reid and Brandon Kurtz took over, combining for 17 points and 9-of-13 clutch free throws to secure the win.

"It?s great. It?s what we play for all year," said Kareem Reid. "This is what we?ve been working and practicing for and it?s going to be exciting this week."

Fayetteville took advantage of three-point shooting to keep the game close, sinking nine long-distance shot while Asheville went 0-for-4. The Patriots couldn?t overcome their own miscues though as they handed the Altitude 29 points off of 20 turnovers.

Kareem Reid finished the game with 20 points, two assists and two steals and Desmond Penigar tallied 16 points and five rebounds. Brandin Knight chipped in 12 points and a team-high five assists and Greg Stevenson chipped in 11 points and nine boards.

Aside from Satterfield, two other Patriot players scored more than 20 points as Junie Sanders poured in 24 along with seven rebounds and five assists as Cedric Henderson turned in 23 points and seven rebounds of this own.

The Altitude will host the Huntsville Flight, who defeated the Charleston Lowgators tonight, in the NBDL Championship Game Saturday, April 17 at the Asheville Civic Center.

"We had no preference as to which team comes in here," said Reid. "We?re happy to be playing at home."
