Allen's Tyler Ludwig Named CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman
March 26, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
GLENDALE, AZ (March 26, 2014) - The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today that Tyler Ludwig of the Allen Americans has been named the recipient of the 2013-14 Central Hockey League's Most Outstanding Defenseman award.
The honor is "Ëpresented annually to the Central Hockey League defenseman who has demonstrated the greatest all-round ability in the position' and is determined through balloting of CHL head coaches, communications departments and select media members in each CHL market.
Ludwig was named a member of the All-CHL team earlier this week for the second consecutive season and beats out co-finalists Wichita's Andrew Martens, Quad City's Nicholas Rioux, Missouri's Matt Stephenson and Rapid City's Riley Weselowski for the top defenseman award. Ludwig defeated Stephenson by just three votes, the two shared the All-CHL team defensive honors.
Ludwig leads all defensemen in scoring with 52 points and is also tops with 20 goals scored. The Rhinelander, Wisconsin native is also tops in power play goals (12) and tied for the league lead among defensemen with four game winning goals.
The 28-year-old defenseman becomes the first Allen player to win the Most Outstanding Defenseman Award.
The former Western Michigan University star (2006-10) is in his fourth professional season and third with the Americans. In 187 career CHL games, Ludwig has scored 35 goals with 96 assists (131 points) and he has five goals and 11 assists in 25 career CHL playoff games (helped Allen to the 2013 CHL Championship). The 6-2, 205-pound defenseman has played in nine career American Hockey League games (Texas, San Antonio and Houston) and 70 career ECHL games (Idaho).
The CHL Coach of the Year is the next award to be announced and that will take place on Thursday, March 27.
