Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - In the penultimate homestand of the 2021-2022 regular season, the Eastern Conference-leading Chicago Steel (34-12-8-1; 77 pts.) take on the Green Bay Gamblers (22-29-3-1; 48 pts.) for Pucks and Pups Night presented by PetSuites on Friday, April 8 and Board Game Night presented by TopShelf Sports Cards with a one-of-a-kind Rusty Chess Piece Giveaway on Saturday, April 9 at Fox Valley Ice Arena followed by a post-game skate for fans in attendance.
Having already earned a berth in the 2022 Clark Cup Playoffs, the Steel can become the first team in the Eastern Conference to secure a first-round bye, needing just two points to ensure a top-two finish in the East.
Steel fans can bring their dog to Friday night's game. Dedicated sections of Fox Valley Ice Arena will become canine-friendly seating, open to dogs large and small during Friday's contest. In addition to special seating for those accompanied by their four-legged friends, prizes will be won by participants, both human and four-legged, during games of 'Musical Sit' and a 'Best Trick' contest during the night.
Sections 204 and 205 will be reserved for fans with dogs and are available for purchase at ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com. Those bringing dogs should enter through Door 11 in the northwest corner of Fox Valley Ice Arena.
This weekend marks Parents Weekend for the Steel. Following Friday's game, the team will honor the parents of Steel players as well as housing families with introductions and photographs on the ice.
The Steel giveaway schedule wraps up with a unique addition to any chess fanatic's collection on Saturday night - a Rusty chess piece with the lovable Steel mascot dressed as the King for the first 500 fans at the game. Board Game Night concludes the weekend on home ice with puzzles and games for fans who want to flex their knowledge of classic board games that shaped the pre-internet era. After the game, fans can take part in the final post-game skate of the season by bringing their own skates or renting for $4.
Last weekend, the Steel battled to earn three out of four possible points against the Madison Capitols with a 7-2 victory on home ice on April 1 and forced overtime in Wisconsin the following night with an improbable comeback against Madison, scoring three goals in the final 3:03 of regulation before eventually falling 6-5 in overtime.
Steel forward Nick Moldenhauer totaled a six-point weekend with a marker and five assists over the pair of games, bringing the Mississauga, Ontario, native's point total to 38 (16G, 22A) through 39 games played which shares fifth among USHL rookies during the 2021-2022 campaign.
The 2021-2022 regular-season series between Chicago and Green Bay concludes this weekend with the pair of matchups at Fox Valley Ice Arena as the Steel have earned 10 out of a possible 16 points in eight meetings against the Eastern Conference foe this season.
The Gamblers will attempt to keep their 2022 Clark Cup Playoffs hopes alive as they are currently on the outside looking in at the Eastern Conference playoff picture, trailing the sixth-place Team USA by seven points with seven games to play.
Northbrook, Ill., native Luke Weilandt, the only Illinois-born player on the Green Bay roster, has totaled 12 points (5G, 7A) in his second full season of USHL action, including a goal and two helpers through eight matchups against the Steel.
Chicago takes to the road for a three-game set starting with two games against the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16 before a Sunday afternoon clash against Team USA (U17) on April 17 at 3:05 pm CT.
Chicago will return home for its final regular season home game on Friday, April 22 on Fan Appreciation Night presented by Smithfield. The Clark Cup Playoffs begin April 25.
