MONTREAL - Montreal Impact striker Ali Gerba has been selected by the Canadian National Team to play in the 11th edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, from June 5 to June 25, in the United States.
¬ÅThis is a huge honour for me, ¬Â said Gerba. ¬ÅI can ¬â¢t wait to represent my country in this important championship. I hope to play well and help the national team win. ¬Â
Gerba will participate in his third Gold Cup after suiting up for Canada in 2007 and 2009. He is the country's all-time leading scorer in this tournament with six goals. Along Dwayne De Rosario, he is also the country's active leading goal scorer in international matches, with 15 goals, currently in fourth place on the all-time list.
¬ÅIt ¬â¢s always positive for the club when a player is selected to represent his national team, ¬Â added sporting director Nick De Santis. ¬ÅAli will get the chance to play high level games, which will be beneficial for him. We wish him a lot of success in this tournament. ¬Â
The Canadian team will play its first game of the championship versus USA on June 7 at Ford Field, in Detroit. Canada will then face Guadeloupe on June 11, at Raymond James Stadium, in Tampa, and Panama, on June 14, at Sporting Park, in Kansas City.
Meanwhile, Canada will play a friendly against Ecuador on June 1, at BMO Field, in Toronto.
With the Impact this season, Gerba has scored two goals in five regular season matches. He also scored against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, on May 4, in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, and on May 11 in a 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls, in a friendly at Saputo Stadium.
