Columbus Lions News Release

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) announce that wide receiver Earl Alexander and defensive back Damian Daniels have been named the PIFL Week 3 Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. Both players had significant impacts as the Lions improved to 2-1 on the young 2014 season with a 71-34 victory over the Georgia Fire on Friday night.

Alexander led all Columbus receivers in the Lions' win over the Fire with 120 yards and four receptions, three of them for touchdowns. All three touchdowns were on long plays of 28, 40, and 45 yards. Alexander returned to Columbus and is in his second season with the Lions after a successful four-year collegiate stint at the University of Alabama, where he was part of national championship teams in 2008 and 2009. Prior to playing for the Crimson Tide, Alexander was a standout dual-threat quarterback for the Red Devils of Central High School in Phenix City, passing for ten touchdowns and rushing for seven more as a senior and scoring 19 touchdowns (12 passing, seven rushing) as a junior.

Daniels snagged his 98th and 99th career interceptions in Friday night's win, tying then breaking the all-time career indoor football interception record. His 98th career interception was a 28- yard pick-six, while his record-setting 99th interception was returned 26 yards to the Georgia 3 yard line. Daniels played the first five seasons of his indoor football career for the Lions as they played in the WIFL, AIFA, and SIFL. He earned league Defensive Player of the Year honors a whopping four times in his five years in Columbus (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011), picking up 76 interceptions during that time and helping the Lions to the 2010 SIFL title. In 2012, he headed south to join the rival Albany Panthers in the first season of the PIFL. He picked up the inaugural PIFL Defensive Player of the Year award in 2012, helping to bring the Panthers a championship.

After staying with Albany for the 2013 season, Daniels returned to Columbus in the offeseason to play for the Lions. He currently leads all players in the PIFL with three interceptions on the season to date.

After a trip north to face the Trenton Freedom on Saturday, the Lions return home to once again face the Georgia Fire on Saturday, April 26 at 7 PM EDT. Plenty of great seats are still available for the game. For more information, contact the Lions at 706.322.3336.
