Albany Firebirds News Release
Albany, N.Y., March 13, 2004 â Albany Conquest Head Coach Steve Matthews has added some depth to his offensive and defensive line with the return of Nick Anderson, who was assigned to the Conquest yesterday by the arenafootball2 (af2) league office in Chicago. Also assigned yesterday was Stevie Scott (WR/DB), who was invited to two personal workouts with Kansas City Chiefs in 2003. The Albany Conquest's training camp begins on March 25 and Coach Matthews is inching closer to solidifying his pre-season roster.
"We are fortunate to have Nick back on the line for us. He brings a lot of arena football experience to our team and will be able to help some of our rookies in training camp," said Coach Matthews. "Stevie Scott is a player who has a ton of potential and came highly recommended to me by Jim Criner, who is a scout with the Kansas City Chiefs organization," added Matthews.
Anderson participated in training camp with the Columbus Destroyers of Arena Football League (AFL) in January, along with four other players that were members of the Northeast Division Champion Albany Conquest in 2003. Ryan Vena and Corey Hill both earned roster spots with the Destroyers, while Anderson, Ljubomir "Lube" Stamenich, and Phil Taylor were released by the Destroyers in January. Anderson joins Stamenich, who was assigned to the Conquest on February 18, on the Albany Conquest line for the 2004 season.
Anderson played in all 16 games for the Conquest last season, totaling 11 tackles, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and a safety. Anderson began his arena football career with the Iowa Barnstormers in 2001, amassing 16 tackles with five for a loss and 3.5 sacks. Anderson also recorded a safety, a blocked kick, and an interception, which he returned 19 yards for a touchdown. He played for the Columbus (GA) Wardogs in 2002 recording 18 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. During his three-year af2 career, he has caught five passes for 55 yards and scored four touchdowns playing from the tight end position.
Scott is entering his rookie season in af2. He had two workouts last year with the Kansas City Chiefs, and was invited to personal workouts with the Indiana Firebirds and Columbus Destroyers just prior to last year's AFL playoffs. Scott was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine at Rutgers University in 2000. He was a 1st Team All-Conference selection at wide receiver and kick returner for Morrisville State College. He graduated from Corcran High School in Syracuse in 1998 where he was a 1st Team All-State selection at wide receiver and was a NYS track and field champion in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash events.
The Albany Conquest home opener is on April 16 against the Manchester Wolves at 7:30 p.m. at the Pepsi Arena and will include performances by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. For ticket information, please call (518) 487-2222 or visit www.albanyconquest.com.
