Alabama Vipers Add Two More AFL Vets
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Alabama Vipers continue to build a veteran roster full of former Arena Football League standouts.
The Vipers latest assignees from Arena Football One are offensive/defensive lineman Marcus "Snowball" Owen - a seven-year AFL vet and former All-Big 12 selection at Kansas - and offensive lineman Julius Gant, a Middle Tennessee State alum who spent the 2006-08 AFL seasons with the San Jose SaberCats.
"Both of these guys are talented big men with several years of arena experience,'' Alabama coach Dean Cokinos said. "More importantly, they fit right in to the type of player that we actively pursue in Huntsville - which is hard-working and team oriented."
Owen (6-foot-2, 335 pounds) spent the 2003-06 with the New York Dragons and played both center and noseguard, earning All-AFL Ironman honors in '05. He totaled 41 tackles and four sacks in his four seasons in New York and nine tackles in '07-'08 for the Tampa Bay Storm.
Owen's movie credits include "The Longest Yard" and "The Game Plan".
Gant (6-3, 305) spent the 2005 season with arenafootball2's Rio Grande Valley Dorados before moving to the AFL, where he totaled four receptions for 43 yards and three touchdowns while playing in 35 games over three seasons in San Jose.
