Akron Racers News Release
Akron, OH-The Akron Racers will host their annual "Together Against Breast Cancer Night" at Firestone Stadium when the team plays the league-leading Philadelphia Force, Saturday June 5 at 7:05pm. The Racers have been a supporter of various breast cancer related projects for nearly 10 years. Spearheaded by their owner, Joey Arrietta, the Racers have launched numerous programs to support breast cancer.
Since the beginning of the WQMX "Muffins for Mammogram Program" eight years ago, the Racers have conducted tournaments, auctions and fund-raising campaigns to provide uninsured women access to mammogram screenings. Over $6,000 has been raised for the "Muffins for Mammogram Program" from these projects.
Recently, on behalf of the entire Racers organization, Arrietta pledge to raise $25,000 toward the Family Conference Room located in the recently opened breast cancer wing at Akron General Medical Center. The money raised will provide hi-tech audio-visual equipment that will assist physicians, patients and their families as they discuss treatment options. This past May, Arrietta presented Dr. Andrew Fenton, Medical Director of the Akron General McDowell Cancer Center, a check for $6,000 toward that pledge.
On Saturday, as a part of the festivities surrounding the game, Arrietta will present the second check for $3,000 from the "Bucks for Breast Cancer" Campaign. Each night at the bottom of the fourth inning, Arrietta and her staff collect "just a dollar" in pink buckets. Often Racers fans contribute $5.00, $10.00 and even $20.00 toward the program.
