Akron Racers News Release
Akron, Ohio, June 11, 2015 - In the much anticipated 2015 home opener, the Akron Racers (2-4) fell to the Pennsylvania Rebellion (3-7) in a tough 2-1 loss. The Racers scattered 4 hits throughout the game, but loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th inning. Emily Weiman earned her first win of the season while pitching 6 innings and not allowing a run. Emma Johnson came in for the Rebellion in the 7th and picked up the save.
Jill Barrett went 1-2 with one walk for the Racers and Ashley Thomas went 2-3 and drove in the lone run for the Racers. Lisa Norris fell to 0-2 on the season while throwing a complete game for the Racers. Norris only allowed 6 Rebellion batters to reach base. The Rebellion broke the scoring open in the top of the 4th inning when Alisa Goler homered to right field. The Rebellion added to the lead in the top of the 5th inning when Samie Garcia doubled to left center, driving in pinch runner Courtney Senas.
Coach Brian Levine said, "It's disheartening to see that loss because we are a very talented group. It's early in the season and I think that we will figure it out."
Former Cleveland Browns quarterback, Bernie Kosar, threw out the first pitch before the Racers took the field. Kosar signed autographs, laughed and joked with fans, and watched the first inning.
Bernie is a proud supporter of the Akron Racers organization and he says he was happy to be here at the game.
"It was an honor to be out there," said Kosar. "The electricity is extremely impressive. It really is humbling."
"As a father of four children and watching fastpitch softball, the game really amazing to me. The competition is fantastic, but the athleticism of the girls is really even more impressive."
The Racers return to play on June 12th, 13th at 7:05 p.m. ET and 14th at 4:05 p.m. ET as they complete the weekend series against the Rebellion.
