Evansville BlueCats News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats are pleased to announce that AJ Bryant has signed a contract and will return to play for the BlueCats for the remainder of the 2007 season. Bryant played for the Evansville BlueCats last season, joining the team in Week 13 of the 2006 season.
Bryant was a key addition to the BlueCats defense down the stretch in 2006, as he grabbed an amazing 5 interceptions in just 6 games with the team last season. He also tallied an impressive 32.5 tackles in those 6 games in the BlueCats defensive backfield.
Last season, Bryant was recognized by the league when he earned UIF Defensive Player of the Week honors for his Week 15 performance against the Ohio Valley Greyhounds. In that game, Bryant led all players with 9 total tackles, including a tackle for a loss. His biggest play of the night came on the final play of the game. The Greyhounds had the ball on fourth and goal inside the BlueCats two yard line when Bryant intercepted a pass on the goal line from Greyhounds quarterback Matt Kohn. The interception came with no time left on the clock and sealed the win for the BlueCats, while also clinching the team a spot in the 2006 UIF playoffs.
Evansville BlueCats Head Coach John Hart said, "AJ is one of the best football players I've ever coached. He's good enough to play several positions at an All-Star level and he's always making big plays in big situations."
AJ was one of the defensive leaders for the Georgia Southern football team that finished the 2005 season ranked #9 in the USA Today NCAA Division I-AA final poll. He started at free safety in all 12 games as a senior in 2005, making 59 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, one sack, and lead the team with 4 interceptions and 5 pass break ups. He returned one of his interceptions for 74 yards and a touchdown in a game against Morehead State, which game him 253 career interception return yards, a new school record. He was also the holder on extra point and field goal kicks. AJ was scouted and placed through the Indoor Football Scouting Bureau.
This Saturday, Bryant and the rest of the Evansville BlueCats travel to Rockford, Illinois, to take on the Rock River Raptors. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05pm.
