WILLIAMSPORT, P.A. - In the long awaited anticipation of the first ice rink facility in the history of Williamsport, the community of Williamsport and Lycoming County are seven days away from the Grand Opening of Airmen Pond at Bowman Field.

Last Monday the city saw Bowman Field's parking lot filled with a dozen tractor trailers of pallets carrying staging equipment, rink equipment, a 400 ton chiller and the infamous zamboni. A sight so many have been waiting for over the course of the last 15 years.

Rich Cubin, Vice-President of Rink Specialists and his crew began the intense 15 day process of erecting the first Ice Arena in Williamsport history. The first crucial step after prepping the field is building the 20,000 square foot platform stage for the ice arena to be built on. Once the staging system is completed the cooling mats, boards and glass, and piping hook ups to the 400 ton chiller can go up in preparation for making ice.

`It's a very strategic process in erecting any ice arena, never mind an outdoor arena, but these guys do this everyday and it's pretty amazing to watch the entire process develop right before your eyes," said Don Kirnan, President of the Williamsport Ice Arena Non-Profit Organization heading the project.

The ice rink is scheduled to be completed by October 15thin time for the Williamsport Outlaws Professional Hockey Team to open up their 2012 Training Camp in preparation for their opening night on October 24th.

Along with the Outlaws, Airman Pond at Bowman Field will officially become the home to the Williamsport and Lycoming County community for the public to use throughout the winter months beginning October 15th for public skating, youth hockey and figure skating, adult hockey and numerous outside events.

"This is really a special time for the community of Williamsport because this is truly their home," said Kirnan. `We are excited to introduce winter skating to Lycoming County and the great city of Williamsport this year with the hopes of a permanent facility next year."Kirnancommented, "It (Williamsport) has been a northern city with no ice rink. Youth organizations have been trying for 15 to 20 years to get an ice pad built."Kirnanadded,"This is an exciting time for Williamsport and its surrounding communities."

You can visit www.williamsporticearena.com for all information on scheduling and events. Therewill be open skates beginning the 16th of the month for the public.

Open skates will be held every night from 7-9pm during the week and twice on both Saturdays and Sundays, with extended holiday hours. Kirnan added.

Their will be a ribbon cutting ceremony held at Airmen Pond at Bowman Field on October 15th at 6pm. All members of the community are encouraged to attend as we welcome the first ice rink facility in Williamsport history.
