AIFL ready for playoffs
June 15, 2006 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) News Release
The road to the second American Indoor Football League championship game - now sporting a new name - begins Thursday as the Huntington Heroes (9-5) and the Reading Express (12-2) begin Northern Conference playoff action. The surging Canton Legends (10-4) host the Erie Freeze (10-4) Saturday night. Reading has won 11 straight games, Canton five.
In the Southern Conference, it's Monday night football when the Rome Renegades (12-2) host the Chattahoochee Valley Vipers (8-6) in the Georgia semifinal while the defending league champion Richmond Bandits (12-2) face the Raleigh Rebels (8-6). Conference championships are next weekend, with the American Bowl slated in July at the remaining top seed.
The American Bowl replaces the Governor's Cup as the title of the title game. The Bandits defeated the Freeze 56-30 to cap off the AIFL's inaugural season.
"We have an improved presentation game with a better name and a great logo, " League president Andrew G. Haines said. "I'm excited to watch the playoffs unfold. The teams are playing a high quality of football and the championship is up for grabs."
