Erie Explosion News Release
(Belle Vernon, PA) - The Pittsburgh RiverRats of the AIFA announced that placekicker, J.R. Cipra, formerly of the Erie Freeze and Canton Legends, will join the RiverRats for the upcoming 2008 season.
Cipra (5'9"-170) will be entering his fifth professional football season and has established himself as one of the premier kickers in indoor football. In 2005, he was the league's leading scorer as a kicker for the Erie Freeze helping them win the league's regular-season title. In 2006, Cipra joined the Canton Legends where he won a league championship ring. He began last season with Canton, but was traded mid-season back to Erie. For the year, Cipra kicked 7 field goals, was 49-59 on PAT's, and scored 14 points on kickoffs through the uprights. Cipra played collegiately at Ohio Northern University where he was named a Division III All-American and set twelve school kicking records including most field goals in a game, season, and career.
"Placekicking was a problem for us all season, between injuries and ineffectiveness, and it definitely hurt us in several key games. We're happy that J.R. decided to join us for next season. He knows many of the venues we play in, and he is a threat to score from anywhere on the field, and especially on kickoffs, which we didn't have consistently last year. This is an important signing for us." commented Head Coach Shawn Liotta.
