AHL Quick Hits

May 1, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

Two deciding Game Sevens highlight the first day of May in the American Hockey League. In Milwaukee, the Admirals forced a Game 7 tonight (7:00 CT) with a 6-3 win over Cincinnati last night. Darren Haydar and Simon Gamache recorded a goal and two assists apiece and Milwaukee scored three times on the power play, giving them 12 PPG for the series. Haydar, last year's AHL rookie of the year, now has 10 points in the series, including nine in three games at the Bradley Center.

Syracuse and Rochester are also going the distance, with Game 7 set for tonight (7:30 ET) at the historic Onondaga County War Memorial. The Amerks have won the last two games of the series by a combined score of 13-5, and are trying to become the 12th team in AHL history to successfully rally from a 3-1 series deficit. Rochester is 7-2 all-time in seventh games, while the Crunch are 1-1, most recently dropping a 6-2 decision at home to Chicago in the 2002 conference semifinals.

Norfolk avoided elimination with a 2-1 win over Philadelphia last night, as Blake Bellefeuille scored on a power play with 1:54 left in regulation. The Phantoms still lead the series, 3-2, with Game 6 back at the Wachovia Center tonight (7:05 ET). Craig Anderson made 26 saves for the Admirals and Quintin Laing added his team-leading fifth goal of the postseason. Four of the first five contests played in the series have ended in 2-1 scores.

Hartford got two goals from Jed Ortmeyer and 27 saves from Jason LaBarbera to post a 3-1 win over Worcester last night; the series shifts to the Centrum Centre for Game 2 tonight (7:05 ET). Ortmeyer, a rookie out of the U. of Michigan, returned to the Wolf Pack lineup in the first round after playing 58 NHL games with the N.Y. Rangers this season. Jozef Balej added a shorthanded goal for his third game-winner of the postseason, and LaBarbera's bid for a third straight home shutout ended with 3:33 left in regulation.

Tavis Hansen scored twice and Nolan Schaefer made 32 saves as Cleveland staved off elimination with a 4-1 win over Hamilton in Game 5 last night. Christian Ehrhoff and rookie Tim Conboy added two assists each for the Barons, who converted three times on the power play in a span of 7:04 over the first and second periods. Bulldogs forward Alexander Perezhogin has been suspended indefinitely by the AHL for his actions against Cleveland's Garrett Stafford, who was released from Hamilton General Hospital early this morning.
