New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Chris Aguila's sixth-inning home run broke a 1-1 tie and propelled him past J.R. Phillips into first place on the Zephyrs' all-time home run list, leading New Orleans to a 5-1 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers on Thursday night.
Aguila sent a towering drive to left field leading off the bottom of the sixth, and a leaping effort by Omaha's Derrick Robinson came up empty, putting Aguila into the record books as the club's career home run leader.
Early on, it was again the Johnny Giavotella show, as the Metairie native continued to inflict damage on his hometown team by smashing his 10th home run of the year with one out in the first inning.
The Zephyrs evened the score in the fourth when Kevin Mattison led off with an infield single, stole second base and moved to third with a ground out by Gil Velazquez. Chris Coghlan tied the game, scoring Mattison with a sacrifice fly to deep center.
After Aguila gave the Z's the lead with his sixth-inning home run, the Zephyrs sent all nine batters to the plate in the seventh inning, capitalizing on Mike Cervenak's leadoff walk against Omaha starter Chris Dwyer. Gaby Sanchez doubled down the third base line before Nick Green greeted reliever Tommy Hottovy with a three-run homer over the left field wall, increasing the lead 5-1.
Chris Hatcher threw a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout to secure the victory.
Gaby Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a run scored, as the Zephyrs avoided losing three consecutive games to open a series for only the second time this season.
Giavotella fell a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-3 with a walk. He is now 8-for-10 over the first three games of the series.
Ryan Webb (2-0) dealt 2 2/3 innings, giving up one walk and one strikeout to earn the win in relief of starter Tom Koehler, who surrendered one run and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Dwyer (1-2) took the loss for Omaha, allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings.
New Orleans will conclude the series Friday at 7pm at Zephyr Field. Righty Omar Poveda will start on the slab for New Orleans, facing Omaha's southpaw Doug Davis.
