Aftershock make history, Giuliana Mendiola starts

Giuliana Mendiola, the 5'11 former Women's PAC-10 Player of the year made a lot of people proud of her Sunday in Los Angeles, starting for the Los Angeles Aftershock and registering 12 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in the Aftershock 141-102 win over the Tijuana Dragons. Mendiola was 4 of 6 from the field, and played along side of her brother Fabrizio in the second quarter. Fabrizio finished the game with 2 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

Mendiola was not the only story for Los Angeles, as Nick Sheppard and Ramel "Rock" Lloyd got off to fast starts, combining for 22 points in the first quarter, while Olden Polynice dished out 4 assists to go with his 7 rebounds. Mendiola hit her first big play with a backcourt steal and a jumper (worth 3 points via the ABA's 3-D rule), and also registered 2 assists and steals in the quarter. Los Angeles led after one quarter 32-20.

Mendiola scored her second basket of the game off a three pointer from the top of the key, and had a second 3-D basket off a turnover to lead the scoring charge for LA. Dion Bailey and Corey Williams combined for 11 points to offset 12 points by John White for Tijuana. The Aftershock led 64-45 at half-time.

Sheppard and Lloyd repeated their first quarter performance by combining for 22 points, and Mendiola hit another three pointer and assisted on two baskets to Will Burr for three point baskets. Chris Ferguson and Marques Crane caught fire and joined White for 20 points in the third, but Los Angeles continued to lead 101-77.

Scott Freymond was the star of the fourth quarter, nailing four 3 point baskets on his way to 16 points in the period. Jason Braxton and Jamar Cramer also were exceptional off the bench for Andre Smith, as Los Angeles evened its record to 2-2. Sheppard led the LA scorers with 24 points, while Freymond and Lloyd added 23 and 20 respectively. Burr had 16 points while Mendiola and Braxton finished with 12. Olden Polynice had 13 rebounds and 6 assists in the win. White led all scorers with 32 points, while Ferguson and Gene Shipley added 16 each.
