July 13, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Los Angeles Aftershock News Release
Los Angeles, CA. Coach Andre Smith is looking for a diamond amongst the summer league free agents and wannabe pro players. Derek Jones is looking like a shining diamond for the Aftershock scoring 20 points and grabbing 7 rebounds for the team in a tough 102-100 loss to Team Unity in Pro Summer League play in Long Beach, California.
The Aftershock started quickly behind Jones racing to an early 8 point lead before Unity went on a 14-4 run to lead 23-19 after one period. Unity stayed hot in the second leading by as much as 15 as the Aftershock defense fell apart with Chip Conner on the bench 30 seconds into the period with his fourth foul. A.J. Diggs struggled at the free throw line but the Aftershock never quit.
Darwin Carter led the way in the fourth quarter with 10 points to cut the deficit to 3 at 71-68. Jones added 8 points while Diggs added 6 as LA climbed back into the game. The fourth quarter was intense back and forth. After several lead changes, Jones scored on a dunk to tie the game at 73. The final minutes were tight with Charles Litt and Wendall Robinson both adding 5 points each off the bench for the Aftershock. Missed free throws and missed opportunities gave Team Unity the lead, but Diggs cut the lead to two with a free throw with 8 seconds left. The Aftershock had one shot to tie the game but a running one hander rolled off the rim to hand the team the loss.
LA will play the NBA Pros today at 1030am MST. The game can be heard on the web at www.laaftershock.com and www.abalive.com. For more information about tickets for the upcoming season email laaftershock@aol.com or visit www.abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
